A Tradition of Service

In December, families and alumni continued the annual tradition of decorating bags for God’s Love We Deliver (GLWD). They were displayed in the Meetinghouse for all to enjoy and later filled with nutritious holiday meals for New Yorkers living with severe illness. This tradition began in 1990 when the late John Jones, then an art teacher, brought students together to decorate 40 bags. Now, almost 1,200 bags are bedecked every year.

The link between the School and GLWD is mutually beneficial. Kristi Ribbecke, Community Service Co-Chair for the Parents Association, comments, “Decorating bags for GLWD is something all students look forward to. The thoughtful messages and beautiful artwork reflect the deeper meaning behind this tradition. Students understand this service opportunity is more than decorating a bag — it’s an opportunity to share in the joy of feeding our neighbors in need.”

Kirsti’s husband Bill, who serves as Co-Vice-Chair of the Board of Trustees at GLWD, adds, “GLWD is so appreciative to have the support of local organizations like Friends Seminary. These relationships result in dedicated volunteers and donors that are the lifeblood of fulfilling our mission to feed those who are hungry and in need. Food is medicine and food is love. There is no better definition of service than healing the sick."
