Few things animate the community more than the sight of the School mascot Rutherford the Owl. Whether it’s the first day of school or a championship basketball game, students flock to this beloved figure. It is also widely known that being Rutherford can be a tough task and is one that often falls to a member faculty or staff.

However, Spirit Day was an exception when parent Eli Griffis P '29, '31, '33 bravely stepped into the weighty costume. Bolstered by his experience as an Avenger and with the support of two daughters to guide his steps and maneuvers, Eli took the community by surprise. A few fellow parents were taken aback by Rutherford’s warm embrace, only to discover it was their friend Eli. He reflects, “I love this community and believe in school spirit. It was exciting to be the recipient of so much adoration.” The community is grateful for Eli’s enthusiasm and support.
